Create an assignment with AI controls

  1. Choose New Assignment.
  2. Enter the creator name, assignment title, and maximum score.
  3. Write the questions and instructions in the center editor.
  4. Add equations, images, tables, or diagrams when needed.
  5. Configure the assignment’s AI behavior.
  6. Select Lock Assignment.
  7. Save and distribute the official .slf file.

Use Defaults for Solf’s standard educational prompts and limits. Customize them when the learning objective requires different guidance.

Set writing provenance expectations

Solf reports the percentage of Manual writing and Outside paste in the document. Teachers can state the expected balance in the assignment instructions and compare those recorded percentages when reviewing a submission.

Current behavior: Solf records and displays the percentages. It does not automatically enforce a minimum Manual writing percentage or maximum Outside paste percentage.

Assignment identity

Why the Assignment Code and message matter

Locking an assignment creates a unique Assignment Code and a short identifying message. Both are carried into student submissions started from that file.

Teachers can publish the expected code and message in the course system, then compare them with submitted files. A mismatch may mean that the student opened a different or outdated assignment.

The code is an identifier, not a password. Review it together with the assignment integrity status, creator, title, filename, provenance, and final signature.

“Open the official Solf assignment file and select Start Submission. Confirm that the Assignment Code and message match this announcement.”

If an assignment changes

Unlock, revise, and lock the assignment again. Redistribute the updated file and tell students to discard the earlier copy. Relocking may retain the existing Assignment Code, so communicate the revision clearly.

For students

Start the correct submission

  1. Open the locked .slf file supplied by the teacher.
  2. Compare its Assignment Code and message with the course announcement.
  3. Enter the student name.
  4. Select Start Submission.
  5. Save the new student working copy.
  6. Write in the student copy, not the locked template.

If the code or message is missing or different, ask the teacher for the correct file. Do not copy the expected code into another document.

Student AI Help

Use AI Help and keep a reviewable trail

Each recorded interaction can include the help mode, selected context, question, response, timestamp, and provider or model where available.

AI-trail limitation: The trail documents AI Help activity inside Solf. It cannot prove that no other AI service was used outside the app.

Verify Progress

Select work already written and request concise feedback.

Ask Question

Ask for clarification or guidance. Continue the conversation when the AI asks a follow-up question.

Guided Learning

Study a concept through a separate example and practice questions before approaching the selected problem.

AI Help may use selected text, images, diagrams, figures, and tables as context. The assignment’s prompts and limits apply to these interactions.

Copying a response

AI Help does not insert responses automatically. Solf also blocks detected automated typing or insertion from external AI tools, including Codex and Claude Code. When copying is allowed, select Copy for Pasting and paste intentionally. Solf records the paste as Outside paste and counts the copy action.

Protection scope: These controls apply to activity detected within the Solf editor. Changes made outside Solf may affect the document’s integrity or verification status.

Writing process

Understand writing provenance

Solf summarizes text created in the editor and text pasted from outside. It can also show paste-event counts, the largest outside paste, and AI Help activity.

Important limitation: Solf records that a paste occurred. It cannot always identify whether the source was AI, a website, a book, another document, or another person.

Provenance provides context for review. It does not independently prove authorship or misconduct.

Sign and review the submission

Students

  1. Review the instructions, citations, provenance, and AI activity.
  2. Open the Sign inspector.
  3. Enter the legal name and select Sign and Lock.
  4. Submit the signed .slf file as directed by the teacher.

Teachers

Compare the assignment identity, review AI Help activity and provenance, and check signing and verification status. Treat these records as supporting context rather than an automatic verdict.

Frequently asked questions

Assignment FAQ

Can AI write directly into a student document?

No. Solf keeps AI Help responses outside the document and blocks detected automated typing or insertion from external AI tools. Text brought into the editor must be intentionally pasted when the assignment permits it.

Do AI trails prove that no external AI was used?

No. They document AI Help activity recorded inside Solf. Review them with provenance, assignment identity, and other submission information.

Does Outside paste prove that external AI was used?

No. It records a paste but does not reliably identify its source.

Do students enter the Assignment Code?

No. It is carried into the working copy when the student starts from the correct locked assignment.

Does a matching code prove that a submission is valid?

No. The code identifies the assignment. Review it with the file’s other integrity and verification information.
